this is merak
I’ve worked in kitchens and hospitality for most of my life. Food is what I know, but I never wanted merak to only be about food.
I started filming the people around me and it grew from there. First it was chefs, mates and family. Then clothes, music, photos, writing and anything else I wanted to try.
Most of it comes from Melbourne and the people I know. There isn’t a big plan to make it fit into one category. If I care about it and want to make something from it, you’ll see it here.
za merak
I grew up hearing my folks and relo’s say “za merak” when something was done beautifully. Most of the time it was about food. Like if a dish comes out perfect or any job well done, someone would say it.
It’s hard to translate without making it sound more complicated than it is. It basically means, that’s perfect.
That’s where the name came from. It wasn’t some branding exercise. It was just a word I grew up hearing that made sense for what I wanted to do.
as a moving portrait
merak is every man and woman. It’s the very essence of my creative work.
This ones on an old friend, from my days shooting around Footscray. The context is just her making Baba Ganoush.
The point is in the little accents, quirks and those little things you know people by.
